Trainings in Shaki and Oguz on prevention of soil degradation
Economic Research Center ( ERC) conducted training on “ Soil degradation, erosion, salination and other preventives measures” in Shaki and Oguz for farmers, and local representatives of state agencies, including self-governance bodies. The training was funded by OSCE Baku Office within the framework of “Public advocacy and raising awareness among land users on protection of soil fertility”.
The trainings were conducted in Oguz andShaki on May 30-31 respectively.
GalibTogrul, the project coordinator delivered opening remarks and informed participants about the global soil degradation issue and stressed the important work done by international organizations, including OSCE.
Afterwards, the project coordinator talked about the current situation of agriculture in Azerbaijan, activities carried out towards preservation of soil fertility, degradation, erosion as well as works implemented by state agencies on restoration of land salinization. He considered that the implemented activities are not sufficient and therefore, land users can prevent degradation by observing the rules on how to utilize of land. GalibTogrul also mentioned that the insurance of crediting of agriculture is in low level.
After the speech of project coordinator, VahidMahharamov the project expert started the in depth training on the problem. The expert illustrated comparative analysis of soil fertility in last year in the world and later presented the results of production regarding planting and livestock.
After construction of Oguz-Gabala-Baku water pipeline the water shortage becameactual and the volume of water was dropped.
The training participants underlined that there are serious issues related to grain production in the region, especially the next planting system was disrupted and as a result of failure to combat against mushroom disease, grain beetle the grain production was plummeted.
VahidMaharramov provided recommendations to training participants to overcome this or similar challenges in the future and said that he will deliver the mentioned problems in the training to the attention of representatives of state agencies.
After the training the ERC delegation paid visit to grain fields in both regions and assessed the current situation.
