Gubad Ibadoglu talked about the Azerbaijan related investments at offshore zones in Vienna.
The Member of Management Board of Economic Reseacrh Center, Gubad Ibadoglu returned from trip to Austria with invitation of Vienna Institute for International Dialogue and Cooperation (VIDC). VIDC has invited foreign experts to organized discussion and among those experts were Gubad Ibadoglu and James Henry, author of the report covering investments to notorious offshore zones and founder of Fair Tax Network Organization, including Brigitte Unger, the professor of Utrecht University of the Netherlands. The main topics of the discussions were money laundering, tax crimes and corruption. The discussion continued for two days, June 4 and 5.
On the first day, the open discussions were attended by state agencies, representatives of parliament, business community, international and local organizations of Austria, including politicians and journalist. There were up to 100 participants at the discussion. Gubad Ibadoglu, talked about economic and political situation, civil society in Azerbaijan as well as voiced initiatives regarding transparency and anti-corruption on his speech delivered at the event. The main focus of the discussion was drawn to the situation in Azerbaijan about upcoming presidential elections, the level of political corruption in the country, including the sources of investment capital of Azerbaijan in offshore zones and the level of shadow economy. Gubad Ibadoglu brought evidences about the level of underground economy in the country as well as the correlation between the scale of corruption and the growth level of oil revenues. He also said that the main causes of current situation is due to obstacle imposed on development of civil society, lack of public participation in decision making process, prevention the development of opponent institutions
Upon his visit to Austria, Gubad Ibadoglu was interviewed by well-known media outlets of the country and attended to radio shows.
